MEGSI
MASTER'S FINAL WORK
The Portuguese regulation on academic degrees (Decree-Law no. 65/2018) defines that a study cycle leading to a master's degree includes, in addition to the set of curricular units that constitute a specialization program, "a dissertation of scientific nature or a project work, original and specially carried out for this purpose, or an internship of a professional nature subject to a final report" (point b) of paragraph 1 of Article 20).
In the MEGSI Program, the Master's Final Work (MFW) can take the form of either a project work or a dissertation. The MFW is developed in Option 3 curricular unit of the 2nd year of the Syllabus.
Project Work in Engineering and Management of Information Systems
The project work involves performing one or more professional functions/professional acts typical of an Engineer and Manager of Information Systems.
A project work may cover various applied aspects of the Engineering and Management of Information Systems area, such as:
Improvement of a business process involving information systems technologies;
Elicit information systems requirements for creating a big data platform;
Development of an IT application;
Apply and adjust existing artificial intelligence solutions to respond to an organization's needs;
Characterization of the adoption of information systems technologies in local government;
Test a software product.
Dissertation in Engineering and Management of Information Systems
The dissertation is a research work, with the possibility of development, in which a topic from the area of knowledge of the Engineering and Management of Information Systems study cycle is treated from a scientific perspective.
A dissertation may cover theoretical or applied aspects of the Engineering and Management of Information Systems area, such as:
Review and analysis of scientific literature on an emerging topic;
Study of the practices of professionals in the field;
Study on the use of technological methods and artifacts;
Proposal for improvement or new methods or technological artifacts;
Application of state-of-the-art practices, methods or artifacts in new contexts.
Both project works and dissertations can take place in a business or academic environment.
